A High Performing Specialist Academy for Technology & Applied Learning

Key Staff

SENCo and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mrs J Hawkemore j.hawkemore@collingwood.surrey.sch.uk

I am the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo for short).  I am the teacher who is responsible for overseeing special educational needs provision at Collingwood College.  I work with other teachers, parents and outside agencies to make sure that students with special educational needs get the right support and help they need at school.

I love animals and have a dog.  I have travelled to a number of places around the world and have lived in Hong Kong.

Deputy SENCo: Mr J Mallaby

I joined Collingwood in 2019 as a trainee History teacher.  I always had a passion for supporting SEN students, something which has ultimately led me to this role.

I work closely with the SENCo and assist in the running of the department.  I am also in charge of the Aspire curriculum, including its design and implementation.

I too am an animal lover, having four dogs and a cat of my own.

SEN Teacher: Mrs L McCann

I joined Collingwood in January 2007 as a member of the English Department and have since worked in a number of roles across different key stages.  Returning to College after maternity leave brought a move to the SEN Department to work with our high-need EAL (English as an additional language) students to support their developing language skills.

Like most English teachers I love plays, films, poetry and above all reading.  19th Century novels are my favourite!

HLTA Inclusion and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mrs D Rourke

I have been working at Collingwood College since September 2012.  I run the Accelerated Learning Centre where I support vulnerable students who cannot access mainstream classes for one reason or another.  I provide a safe, quiet environment for them to work in.  I also lead a team of Learning Support Assistants who support our ASD students who have an Educational Healthcare Plan.  I love being part of the Collingwood team and feel lucky to have amazing LSAs who support me and our students.

My other role is Deputy Designated Safeguard Lead where I work with the DSL and the other DDSLs to ensure all students are safe.

At home I am mum to three children.  We are a family of animal lovers.  We have a small dog, five cats and a rabbit.

I love travelling and try to get away whenever I can.

HLTA Maths and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mrs C Chapman

I have worked within the SEN Department at Collingwood for four years, initially as a Learning Support Assistant and now as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.  I primarily work with the Maths department, leading a small team of LSAs.  Every day brings new challenges and experiences and I find it rewarding to see how students develop academically by increasing both their enjoyment and confidence in Maths.

Maths was my favourite subject at school and I feel lucky that I am able to contribute to the progress of future generations in this area.  I have been lucky enough to continue my studies here and have taken GCSE Statistics this year as a bit of fun and professional development.

Outside of work I am a busy mother; my children keep me occupied with their sporting and social activities.  With my spare time I like to express my creativeness by upcycling old furniture.  I also enjoy walking my dog and socialising with friends.

HLTA SEN Dept / Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mrs J Jennings

I am based in our SEN department and lead a team of LSAs who work with a group of students with SEMH needs.

As a team we work towards building working relationships with the students and in doing so provide them with the opportunity to access their learning to the best of their ability.  We can also provide support through intervention outside of lessons and target those areas where the students are experiencing particular difficulties.

I love the variety in my work and also the fact that I work with a brilliant team within a very supportive department.

At home I have a wonderful family and we are very committed to spending time together.  I have five sons and two amazing grandchildren.  I also have a very energetic German Shepherd and an extremely crazy cat – never a dull moment at home either!

Inclusion Manager and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Nikki Woolven

I joined Collingwood in April 2008 as an LSA and in 2010 I moved into the Inclusion Centre.  I have been the Inclusion Manger since 2012 and my role is to support students with their work and to help them reflect and understand why they have been included.  I will encourage our students to recognise what is expected of them in their day-to-day school life and help them find ways to engage in school in a positive way.  They are provided with a quiet and calm working environment to enable them to do this.  I am a very patient person and I enjoy the challenges the Inclusion Centre brings.

I have two grown up children who both went through Collingwood - so I’ve seen both sides!  I love reading, watching movies and meeting friends for a coffee and a chat!
